Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Nile.
Etymology: < Nile, the name of a river in North and Eastern Central Africa. Compare classical Latin Nīlus, ancient Greek Νεῖλος (Hesiod), of unknown origin.The ancient Egyptian name was jtrw river ( > Hebrew yĕ'ōr ). In Old English and Middle English the name of the river is attested both as Nilus and Nil ; the form Nile is attested from the 15th cent. onwards. With sense 5 compare French Nil (1881), short for vert du Nil (see Nile green n.).
