Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin nigricant-, nigricāns.
Etymology: < classical Latin nigricant-, nigricāns blackish, swarthy, present participle of nigricāre to be blackish < nigr- , niger black (see niger n.1) + -icāre , verbal suffix. Compare Italian †nigricante (14th cent.), Portuguese nigricante (1770 in the passage translated in quot. 1772 at nigrescent adj.). Compare nigricanting adj.
Black; (Botany) turning black with age.
