Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nōn liquet.
Etymology: < classical Latin nōn liquet it is not clear (as a verdict) < nōn not (see non- prefix) + liquet it is clear, impersonal present indicative of liquēre to be liquid, clear (see liquid adj. and n.).

1. Chiefly Law. A verdict of non liquet (see sense B.), given in cases of doubt. Also (in extended use): a condition of doubt or uncertainty.
