单词 nights
释义

nightsadv.

Brit. /nʌɪts/, U.S. /naɪts/
Forms: see night n. and -s suffix1.
Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Frisian nachtes (West Frisian nachts ), Middle Dutch (des) nachtes , (des) nachts (Dutch 's nachts ), Old Saxon nahtes (Middle Low German (des) nachtes ), Old High German nahtes (Middle High German nahtes , German nachts ) < the Germanic base of night n. + the Germanic base of -s suffix1, probably after the Germanic base of days adv.The Germanic base of night n. is feminine, and the formation does not therefore correspond to the regular genitive form of the noun (in contrast to the situation at days adv.; compare discussion at -s suffix1). In later use probably apprehended as a plural.
During the night; at night. Now chiefly North American colloquial, except in to work nights: to work at night, frequently in addition to a daily or official workload; to work the night shift. Cf. night n. 8b.
