ablative absolute n. Grammar (in Latin) an ablative case of a noun or pronoun with a participle (expressed or implied) in agreement, grammatically independent of the main clause, and expressing the time, occasion, or circumstance of a fact stated, as in sole oriente, tenebrae aufugiunt: at the sun rising, darkness flees away. Cf. absolute adj. 1a.
