Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nōminātor.
Etymology: < classical Latin nōminātor a person who nominates a candidate for office (2nd–3rd cent. a.d.) < nōmināt- , past participial stem of nōmināre nominate v. + -or -or suffix. Compare Middle French, French nominateur (16th cent.), Italian nominatore (a1406), Catalan nominador (1688), Spanish nominador (1512 in sense 2, 1734 in sense 1, rare).
1. Chiefly Politics. A person who nominates a candidate for election or for an honour, award, etc. In early use also: a person who nominates another to an office or duty.
