Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nōmen.
Etymology: < classical Latin nōmen name n. In sense 3 after nomen conservandum n., nomen dubium n., nomen novum n., nomen nudum n., nomen oblitum n.
1. Roman History. The second personal name of a citizen of ancient Rome, indicating the gens or clan to which he or she belonged. Cf. praenomen n. 1, cognomen n. 1.
