Origin: From a proper name; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymon: proper name Newcomer.
Etymology: < the name of Erval J. Newcomer (1890–1980), U.S. entomologist, who first described the organ in detail in 1912 ( Jrnl. N.Y. Entomol. Soc. 20 31), after German Newcomersches Drüsenorgan (H. Malicky 1969, in Tijdschr. entomol. 112 251; also Newcomersche Drüse, Newcomersches Organ).
Entomology.
Newcomer's organ n. a glandular organ on the back of the larvae of certain lycaenid butterflies, which secretes a sugary liquid that appears to attract and feed the ants which protect the larvae. Also Newcomer's gland.
