Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: newie n.; new boy n.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps an alteration of newie n., with arbitrary insertion of -b- (perhaps compare freebie n.); or perhaps an alteration of new boy n. after -y suffix6.It seems unlikely that there is any connection with formations in -by suffix , which are much earlier in date.
