Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Dutch nālīke , nālijc , nālic , Old High German nāhlīhho (Middle High German nāchlīche , næhelīche ), Old Icelandic náliga (Icelandic nálega ) < the Germanic base of nigh adv. + the Germanic base of -ly suffix2.Compare also Old English nēahlic (adjective) near, neighbouring.
Now U.S. regional (rare).
