单词 niddering
释义

nidderingn.adj.

Brit. /ˈnɪd(ə)rɪŋ/, U.S. /ˈnɪd(ə)rɪŋ/
Forms: 1500s– nidering, 1800s nithering (irregular), 1800s– niddering.
Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: nithing n.
Etymology: Alteration of nithing n., apparently arising from editorial misreading (see note). Compare niding n. and adj.In the early printed text of William of Malmesbury's historical works (see quot. 1596 at sense A.) the letter ð (in niðing ) was apparently taken to represent the letter d followed by a mark of suspension, thus giving rise to the form nidering . Some examples may be taken either as a noun complement or as a predicative adjective. N.E.D. (1907) notes that the word appears to owe its continued currency to its use in the novels of Sir Walter Scott (see e.g. quot. 1819 at sense B.). With form nithering compare nithering n., and perhaps compare also nithering adj.
