Etymology: < classical Latin nīdāmentum, attested in plural in the sense ‘nesting materials’ ( < nīdus nest (see nidus n.) + -mentum -ment suffix, after armāmentum, etc.) + -al suffix1.Compare scientific Latin nidamentum, used for the external covering of an ovum (1837 or earlier).
