Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin nictāt-, nictāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin nictāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of nictāre to wink or blink, cognate with Old High German hnīgan to bow, Gothic hneiwan to incline. Compare earlier nictating adj. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (ni·kteit) /ˈnɪkteɪt/.
intransitive. To wink or blink; (also) to act as a nictitating membrane. Occasionally in extended use.
