Inflections: Plural unchanged, nicotianas.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nicotiana.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin nicotiana (1565 in Gesner, attributed to the French), apparently < Middle French nicotiane nicotian n.1 (although this is apparently first attested slightly later). Compare Italian nicoziana (16th cent.), nicosiana (Florio, 1598), Spanish †nicociana (1706, translating French). N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (nikōuʃiēi·nă) /nɪkəʊʃɪˈeɪnə/.
(a) Originally: the tobacco plant, Nicotiana tabacum; tobacco (occasionally personified) (now rare). (b) Later more generally: (in form Nicotiana) the genus of chiefly American plants of the family Sloanaceae, which includes N. tabacum, the principal source of tobacco, and other species cultivated for their nicotine-containing foliage or as ornamentals; (also, in form nicotiana) a plant of this genus; (Horticulture) one grown for its night-scented, trumpet-shaped flowers, esp. N. alata.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 180.
