/ˌnjuː wəːld ˈmʌŋki/, U.S. /ˌn(j)u ˌwər(ə)ld ˈməŋki/ Any of the monkeys native to forests in Central and South America, constituting the ‘platyrrhine’ group, which comprises the families Cebidae (including capuchins, howler monkeys, and spider monkeys) and Callitrichidae (including marmosets and tamarins). Occasionally used spec. with reference to the family Cebidae, whose members are characterized by prehensile tails. (See note s.v. monkey n. 1a.)
