Etymology: < French n'est-ce pas ‘is it not (so)?’ (1723) < ne not + est is (see be v.) + ce it + pas , negative particle, specific use of pas pace n.1
‘Is it not so?’ Used esp. to emphasize the truth or probability of the preceding statement.
