Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Pequot Nayantick.
Etymology: < the names in south-eastern New England Algonquian languages of two places (Pequot Nayantick, west of New London, Connecticut, and Nayantaquit the hither in south-eastern Rhode Island), and the ethnic name based on these (e.g. Narragansett Nayantakoog, plural).
Now chiefly historical.

A member of either of two North American Indian peoples living along the coast of Rhode Island and Connecticut at the time of first European contact.These peoples are distinguished as Eastern Niantic and Western Niantic respectively, and are of uncertain relationship to each other.Since the 1990s in form Nehantic (cf. quot. 1998) also: a member of a group claiming descent from the Niantics.
