Originally: nicotinic acid (vitamin B3). Now also: nicotinamide.

1942 Times Herald (Olean, N.Y.) 5 Feb. 6 a/3 The name for nicotinic acid, valuable vitamin, has been changed to ‘niacin’ to avoid confusion with nicotine, which it doesn't contain.
