ΚΠ 1942 Times Herald (Olean, N.Y.) 5 Feb. 6 a/3 The name for nicotinic acid, valuable vitamin, has been changed to ‘niacin’ to avoid confusion with nicotine, which it doesn't contain. 1952 Times 23 Feb. 6/4 The drugs are isomers of niacin, anti-pellagra vitamin, which is a member of the vitamin B complex group once known as vitamin B-3. 1970 Nature 16 May 665/2 Niacin is now acceptably defined as a blanket word for the acid and amide. 1972 Materials & Technol. V. xix. 676 The best dietary sources of niacin are yeast, liver, lean meat, poultry, and legumes. 1993 Guardian 15 Sept. i. 6/2 Those who took the B vitamins riboflavin and niacin had a 14 per cent reduction in throat cancer, and a 41 per cent drop in eye cataracts.
