Etymology: < Ngoni Ngoni, self-designation, perhaps < a Zulu praise-name.Forms with Bantu class prefixes are sometimes found in English use, as in the following:1883 R. N. Cust Sketch Mod. Langs. Afr. II. xii. 300 Bands of marauders, or Nomads, are met with as far North as the neighbourhood of the Victoria Nyanza under the names of..Ba-Ngoni, Wa-Ngoni, and Ma-Ngoni.1883 R. N. Cust Sketch Mod. Langs. Afr. II. xii. 301 A Missionary..could converse..in Ki-Ngoni, because he knew Zulu... The Ma-Ngoni speak Zulu in varying degrees of purity... Of, relating to, or designating any of several African peoples living chiefly in Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zambia, or their languages.Ngoni groups (followers of Zwangendaba, a Zulu headman) migrated northwards from their original home in Zululand in the early 19th cent., incorporating other ethnic groups as they progressed, and establishing their rule over large areas of central Africa.
