Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Swahili. Partly a borrowing from Venda. Etymons: Swahili ngoma; Venda ngoma.
Etymology: < Swahili ngoma large drum, and its cognate Venda ngoma large, pot-shaped wooden drum (and similar words in many other Bantu languages).The Common Bantu word underlying the word in Swahili, Venda, etc. survives in most Bantu languages. In many languages it is the general word for ‘drum’, although in some it is used for a specific type of drum.
1. In eastern and southern Africa: any of various kinds of drum; (South African) a large single-headed drum of a type traditionally used by the Venda in certain religious ceremonies.
