Etymology: < German Newjanskit (W. Haidinger Handb. der bestimmenden Mineral. (1845) 558) < Newjansk , German transliteration of Nevyansk, the name of a town in Russia (Russian Nev′jansk ), near to which the mineral was found + -it -ite suffix¹. Compare Russian nev′janskit.

A variety of iridosmine containing about 35 to 50 per cent osmium.
