Origin: Formed within English, by shortening. Etymon: English balancing unit.
Etymology: Shortened < balancing unit (compare quot. 19472) < balancing adj. + unit n.In later use perhaps reinterpreted as < balanced adj. (or balance n.1) + unbalanced adj. (or unbalance n.).
Electronics and Telecommunications.
A device that converts between balanced and unbalanced electrical signals, esp. from an unbalanced coaxial cable to a balanced antenna.

Reich Very High-frequency Techniques I. iii. 86 Since antennas are almost always fed by coaxial lines, there is a need for a device to convert the unbalanced voltage of the coaxial cable to the balanced voltage required by the antenna. This balance-to-unbalance transformer is commonly called a balun.
