Etymology: Probably < Hellenistic Greek Νηρίτης, the name of a son of Nereus ( < ancient Greek Νηρεύς (see Nereid n.) + -ίτης -ite suffix¹) + -ic suffix, after German neritisch (Haeckel 1890, in Jenaische Zeitschr. f. Naturwissensch. 25 253). Compare French néritique (1899).

Of, relating to, or designating the shallow region of the sea between the littoral zone and the edge of the continental shelf; inhabiting this region.
