Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek νήριον the oleander (Dioscorides) < νηρόν (fresh) water, use as noun of neuter singular of νηρός fresh (contracted form of ancient Greek νεαρός youthful, fresh < νέος new (see neo- comb. form) + -αρος , extended form of -ρος , suffix forming nouns) + -ιον , neuter of -ιος , suffix forming adjectives, so called because this shrub grows beside streams. Compare Middle French, French nerion (1555), classical Latin nērium nerium n. Compare slightly earlier nerium n.It is possible that ancient Greek νεαρός reflects an Indo-European base also seen in classical Latin noverca stepmother (compare novercal adj.), Armenian nor new, young.
