单词 nerine
释义

Nerinen.

Brit. /nᵻˈrʌɪni/, /nᵻˈriːni/, /nəˈriːn/, U.S. /nəˈrini/, /nəˈraɪni/, /nəˈrin/
Forms: 1800s– Nerine, 1900s– Nerina. Also with lower-case initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Nerine.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Nerine (W. Herbert 1820, in Curtis's Bot. Mag. 47 2124) < classical Latin Nērīnē any of the sea-nymphs born of Nereus, a Nereid, alteration (with substitution of suffix; compare -ine suffix3) of Nērēis , Nēreis Nereid n.The scientific Latin genus name was originally proposed as an alternative to Galatea , which occurs in Virgil ( Eclogues 7. 37) as the name of a water-nymph or Nērīnē . The suggestion that the genus name derives from Khoekhoe narina flower is unlikely, since this word has not been traced in modern Khoekhoe (see Narina n.).
A South African genus of the family Amaryllidaceae, which consists of robust bulbous plants bearing large, lily-like, chiefly pink or red flowers on leafless stems; a plant of this genus, esp. any of the varieties (autumn-flowering in the northern hemisphere) grown for ornament, e.g. Nerine bowderi, or the Guernsey lily, N. sarniensis (also nerine lily).
