Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Nixe.
Etymology: < German Nixe (feminine) water sprite, nymph (see nicker n.1). Compare French nixe (1852; 1844 as nixé ; < German). Compare nix n.2, nicker n.1
In German folklore: a water sprite or nymph having a human torso and the tail of a fish, and able to take on a variety of physical appearances in order to pass unnoticed among humans. See also water nixie n. at water n. Compounds 2g(b).
