Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Swedish lexical item. Etymons: Neptune n., -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < Neptune n. + -ite suffix1, after Swedish neptunit (G. Flink (at the suggestion of N. O. Holst) 1893, in Geol. Föreningens i Stockholm Förhandl. 15 196), so called because of its occurrence with aegirine (see aegirite n.), Ægir being the name of the sea-god in Scandinavian mythology.
Mineralogy.
A monoclinic silicate of sodium, potassium, lithium, ferrous iron, manganese, and titanium, usually occurring as black prismatic crystals.
