The theory that rocks such as granite and basalt were formed by crystallization from the waters of a primeval ocean, rather than by solidification from magma. Cf. plutonism n.The theory, propounded by Abraham Gottlob Werner (see Wernerian adj. and n.), was popular at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th cent., but is now rejected.
