Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; probably modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: nephro- comb. form, -stome comb. form.
Etymology: < nephro- comb. form + -stome comb. form, probably after German Nephrostom (1883 or earlier). Compare earlier nephrostoma n. at nephro- comb. form .
Zoology and Embryology.
The opening, typically funnel-shaped and ciliated, between the coelom and a nephridium or nephric tubule.
