Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek νέϕος , -scope comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek νέϕος cloud (see nephology n.) + -scope comb. form, after German Nephoskop (C. Braun 1864, in Wochenschr. f. Astronomie, Meteorologie u. Geographie 7 260).
Meteorology.
An instrument used to determine the direction of motion of clouds and their angular velocity relative to a given point on the ground.
