Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek νεϕελο-, νεϕέλη.
Etymology: < ancient Greek νεϕελο-, combining form (in e.g. νεϕελοκοκκυγία cloud-cuckoo-land: see cloud-cuckoo-land n.) of νεϕέλη cloud, cognate with classical Latin nebula nebula n. For the related νέϕος cloud, see nephology n.Formations in English are first attested from the first half of the 19th cent., earliest in nephelognosy. Combines predominantly with second elements whose ultimate origin is Greek. Compare French néphélo-, néphélé-, néphél- (formations in which are found from the beginning of the 19th cent.).

nephelodometer n. Obsolete rare an instrument for measuring the distances of clouds from the earth.
