Etymology: < nicot- (in nicotian n.1, nicotiana n.) + -ia suffix1. Compare earlier nicotian n.1 N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (nikōu·ʃia) /nɪˈkəʊʃ(ɪ)a/.
Obsolete.
1. Chemistry. A substance present in extracts of tobacco, either nicotianin or (usually) nicotine.
