单词 nicolaite
释义

Nicolaiten.

Brit. /nɪkəˈleɪʌɪt/, U.S. /ˌnɪkəˈleɪˌaɪt/
Forms: Middle English Nycholaite, Middle English Nycholayte, 1500s Nycolite, 1500s–1600s Nicholaite, 1500s–1600s Nicolait, 1600s Nicholait, 1800s– Nicolaite; also Scottish pre-1700 Nicolait, pre-1700 Nycolait.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Nicolaita.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Nicolaita (Vulgate) < Hellenistic Greek Νικολαΐτης (Rev. 2:6, 15) < ancient Greek Νικόλαος (see note) + -ίτης -ite suffix1. Compare Middle French, French Nicolaïte (1577 in the passage translated in quot. 1586).Certain ecclesiastical writers give Nicolas of Antioch, one of the seven original deacons (see Acts 6:5), as the author of the sect, but it is also possible that the name Νικολαΐτης is merely allegorical, derived from ancient Greek Νικόλαος ( < ancient Greek νίκη victory (see Nike n.) + λαός people) on the assumption that it is etymologically equivalent to Hebrew Bilʿām Balaam (seen on this view as deriving from bāla to swallow down + am nation). Adherents of the doctrine of Balaam are mentioned shortly before the Nicolaites (Rev. 2:14); compare Balaam n.
historical. Now rare.
