Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin neotericus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin neotericus modern, recent, also as noun, a person of modern views, a modern author (5th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek νεωτερικός modern < ancient Greek νεώτερος , comparative of νέος new (see neo- comb. form) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare Middle French, French néotérique (1539), Italian neoterico (1563). Compare slightly earlier neoterical adj.In form neoterique probably partly after Middle French, French néotérique, and partly after antique adj. and n. (see e.g. quot. 1577 at sense A. 1).
