单词 neoteny
释义

neotenyn.

Brit. /nɪˈɒtᵻni/, /nɪˈɒtn̩i/, U.S. /niˈɑtn̩i/
Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Neotenie.
Etymology: < German Neotenie (J. C. E. Kollman 1884, in Verhandl. der Naturforsch. Ges. in Basel 7 391) < ancient Greek νέος young (see neo- comb. form) + τείνειν to extend (see tone n.) + German -ie -y suffix3. Compare Italian neotenia (1885 or earlier), French néoténie (1903). Compare slightly earlier neotenia n., neotenic adj.
Biology.
The retention of juvenile characteristics in a (sexually) mature organism; esp. the appearance of ancestral juvenile characteristics in the adult stage of a descendant, spec. as an evolutionary process in which somatic development is retarded. Later also: the attainment of sexual maturity and reproductive capacity by an organism still in a larval (or other immature) stage of its life cycle. The distinction between retention of juvenile characteristics in an adult form and accelerated sexual maturity in a larval or juvenile form has not always been made, and may be difficult to establish in practice. The terms neoteny and paedogenesis have been applied to both processes, and paedomorphosis to the result of either. Cf. also progenesis n.
