Origin: A borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic nefna , Danish nævne ; also Old Icelandic nemna , Old Swedish, Swedish nämna ) < the same Scandinavian base as Old Icelandic nafn , namn (see name n.). Compare name v., nemn v. Compare slightly earlier nevening n.Forms with -m- (see nemn v.) are occasionally found in manuscripts where the rhyme shows that the present word is intended.
Obsolete.
