Etymology: < neo- comb. form + carzinostatin, an antineoplastic substance isolated from a Streptomyces strain (J. Shōji 1961, in Jrnl. Antibiotics A. 14 27) < carzino- (alteration of carcino- in carcinoma n.) + -stat (in static adj.) + -in suffix¹. Compare scientific Latin carzinostaticus, specific epithet of Streptomyces carzinostaticus (invalidly published c1960).

Pharmacology.

A compound with antibiotic and antineoplastic properties, obtained from a strain of Streptomyces bacteria (sometimes called Streptomyces carzinostaticus), and consisting of a sulphur-containing apoprotein with a non-protein chromophore group that binds to and cleaves double-stranded DNA.The chromophore group of neocarzinostatin is an enediyne, containing a carbon-carbon double bond flanked by two carbon-carbon triple bonds.
