Etymology: < scientific Latin Nemertea, family name (A. de Quatrefages 1846, in Ann. des sci. nat.: Zool. 6 173; < Nemertes , genus name (see nemertine adj. and n.) + -eus : see -eous suffix) + -an suffix. Compare French némertien (A. de Quatrefages, 1846). Compare earlier nemertine adj. and n.

Any member of the taxonomic group (now a phylum) Nemertea (or Rhynchocoela), comprising carnivorous, mostly marine worms with a long, unsegmented, often flattened body and an eversible proboscis used to capture invertebrate prey.
