Etymology: Probably shortened < neuropilema n. Compare German Neuropil (1899 in the passage translated in quot. 1900 at sense 2).

1. Tissue consisting of a dense network of neuronal and glial processes, forming a large part of the grey matter of the nervous system; (also) a structure or region composed of such tissue.
