Medicine.
Originally: a physician who attributes disease primarily to the action of the nervous system (cf. neuropath n. 1, neuropathist n., neuropathology n. 2) (now historical). Later: a physician specializing in the treatment of nervous disorders (= neurologist n.) (now rare or disused); an expert or specialist in the histopathology of the nervous system.
