Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Neisseria.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Neisseria (V. Trevisan 1885, in Atti Accad. Fisio-Medico-Statistica di Milano 3 105) < the name of Albert Ludwig Siegmund Neisser (1855–1916), German dermatologist and bacteriologist, who discovered the causative bacterium of gonorrhoea in 1879 ( Centralbl. f. die med. Wissensch. 17 497) + -ia -ia suffix1.
Microbiology.
A genus of Gram-negative, aerobic diplococci, chiefly comprising commensal inhabitants of the mucous membranes of humans and other mammals, but including several major pathogens, esp. the causative agents of gonorrhoea ( N. gonorrhoeae, also called gonococcus) and a form of bacterial meningitis ( N. meningitidis, also called meningococcus). Also (in form neisseria): a bacterium of this genus.
