Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin necessarium, necessārius.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin necessarium privy (7th cent.; 14th cent. in British sources; compare also necessaria , feminine (from late 12th cent. in British sources)), use as noun of neuter singular of classical Latin necessārius necessary adj. Compare necessary n. 3b.
A privy, esp. in a monastery (historical). In recent use also: a toilet, lavatory (humorous). Cf. necessary adj. 3, necessary n. 3b.
