Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French natron.
Etymology: < French natron (1665; 1653 as naitron ) < Arabic naṭrūn < ancient Greek νίτρον nitre n. Compare Spanish natrón (1787; < French) and German Natron (1810 in Klaproth). Compare anatron n. N.E.D. (1906) also gives the pronunciation (næ·trǫ̆n) /ˈnætrɒn/.
Native hydrous sodium carbonate, NaCO3·10H2O, crystallizing in the monoclinic system and occurring chiefly in solution and as evaporative residues, e.g. in dried lake beds; mineral salt containing this. Cf. soda n.1 1a.
