Etymology: Acronym < the initial letters of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (see North Atlantic Treaty Organization n. at North Atlantic n. 4).
A military alliance of the United States and Canada with a number of European nations. Frequently attributive.The North Atlantic Treaty was signed on 4 April, 1949. It contained clauses that pledged the signatories to mutual support against armed attack, and established a centralized administrative and leadership structure. The founding members were the United States, Canada, Belgium, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and the United Kingdom.
