Etymology: Perhaps < Portuguese negrilho < Spanish negrillo (16th cent. in sense ‘little black person’) < negro Negro n. + -illo , diminutive suffix (compare -illa suffix). Compare earlier Negrito n. and adj.The Spanish word is not attested in these specific senses. In sense A. 2 after French négrille (1879 in this sense; see note below).
