Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French; probably modelled on an Italian lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin; probably modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: French négociant; Latin negōtiant-, negōtiāns, negōtiārī.
Etymology: < (i) French négociant (1599 in Middle French as negociant ; compare négociant n.), or its etymon (ii) classical Latin negōtiant-, negōtiāns businessman, use as noun of present participle of negōtiārī (see negotiate v.), probably via Italian negoziante merchant (a1370; 1598 in Florio as negotiante).
Now rare (chiefly historical).
A person who conducts negotiations, a negotiator; an agent or representative. Formerly also: †a merchant or trader (obsolete).
