Etymology: < French nègre (1516 in Middle French as noun in sense ‘black person’ (compare sense A. 1), 1611 in Cotgrave as adjective in form neigre (compare sense B.)) < Spanish negro Negro n. Compare Dutch neger (c1700), German Neger (17th cent.), Swedish neger (1756; 1680 as negre ), Danish neger (1700). Compare nigger n. and adj.The Irish English, Caribbean, and some U.S. forms preserve early modern English// (diphthongized in some Caribbean forms to /ie/); in the Caribbean the retention of the earlier vocalism was perhaps reinforced by Dutch neger . For coincidence of the word in some dialects with niggard n. compare γ forms and etymological note at that entry. Sc. National Dict. s.v. Neeger n. records the word as still in use in Shetland, Caithness, Moray, Fife, Lothian, Ayrshire, Kirkcudbright, and Ulster in 1963.
Now regional (chiefly Caribbean). Usually derogatory.
