Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the third syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. negativo-positive Brit. /nɛɡəˌtiːvə(ʊ)ˈpɒzᵻtɪv/, U.S. /ˌnɛɡəˌtivoʊˈpɑzədɪv/, /ˌnɛɡəˌtivoʊˈpɑztɪv/.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: negative adj., -o- connective.
Etymology: < negative adj. + -o- connective.English formations are found sporadically from the early 18th cent.
rare.
Used to form adjectives with the sense ‘partly negative and partly ——‘, as †negativo-affirmative, negativo-positive.
