单词 nebbiolo
释义

Nebbiolon.

Brit. /ˌnɛbɪˈəʊləʊ/, U.S. /ˌnɛbiˈoʊloʊ/
Forms: 1700s– Nebiule, 1800s– Nebbiolo, 1800s– Nebiolo. Also with lower-case initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian Nebiolo, Nebbiolo.
Etymology: < Italian Nebiolo (1823), Nebbiolo (a1839) < Italian regional (Piedmont) nebieul , of uncertain origin: perhaps < classical Latin nebula nebula n., either from the whitish patina of the grape, or from the fog which is frequent in Piedmont at the time when the grape is harvested (compare quot. 1970 at Compounds; the Italian form in -bb- probably represents a reanalysis by folk etymology as if < nebbia fog (see nebula n.) + -olo , diminutive suffix (see -ule suffix)); or perhaps a regional variant (with metanalysis: compare N n.) of Italian ebbio dwarf elder, Sambucus ebulus ( < classical Latin ebulum : see ebulum n.), from the similarity in shape and colour of the berries. Compare post-classical Latin nebiolum (14th cent. in a north Italian source).
A variety of black grape grown in Piedmont in north-western Italy. Also: red wine produced from this grape.First recorded in compound Nebbiolo wine.
