Etymology: < an alteration of baekel- (in the name of L. H. Baekeland (1863–1944), the Belgian-born American chemist who invented the material) + -ite suffix1.Baekeland filed a patent application for the material in the United States in 1907 (not using the name) and a trademark application for the name in 1908; both were granted in 1909.
A proprietary name for: any of various thermosetting resins produced as condensation products of formaldehyde with phenol or other phenolic compounds, often combined with inert fillers or fabrics and used to make electrical insulators and (especially in the mid 20th cent.) a wide variety of rigid moulded plastic products. Frequently as modifier.Bakelite was the first successful synthetic plastic, often replacing natural materials such as wood, bone, or horn. Objects made of bakelite are particularly associated with the mid 20th cent., when it was in widespread use before being largely superseded by other plastic materials.
